Get Technical: Our AW20 Outerwear

Our casual coats and jackets are made with a tailor’s eye, using luxurious materials you’d normally expect to see in bespoke suiting. Here, we delve into some of the design features you’ll find on three of the collection’s key outerwear pieces

At Thom Sweeney, we’ve always maintained that we are tailors first and foremost, but we also understand that no man wears a suit 24-7, and we enjoy turning a tailor’s eye to off-duty pieces too. This season, our casual outerwear collection has been developed with the same luxurious fabrics and thoughtful finishing touches you’d expect of our suits and separates. These are three of the season’s sharpest jackets with a breakdown of some of the design features you can expect from each. The Cream Cashmere Bomber This bomber jacket is one of the season’s signature pieces; made from a pure cashmere jersey of exceptional weight and quality. The jersey itself was knitted on a special loom in Italy, with a cream exterior and tonal camel reverse, which we’ve left on show inside the jacket. It’s cut with a regular fit, chrome twin-way zip and all the classic bomber features you’s expect, including side hand-warmer pockets, plus a ribbed collar, cuffs and hem. This is a piece that you can leave to do the talking. Keep the styling simple and layer over one of this season’s fine merino rollnecks or Henley T-shirts with chinos, jeans or even our new-in knitted cashmere track pants. Finish with one of our cashmere caps for an understated off-duty look. The Laser Cut Coat Another new style for us this season, this single-breasted coat is an indispensable smart-casual piece. It’s made from another unique Loro Piana fabric; a softly brushed wool and cashmere blend that’s woven as a double-faced cloth, with a mottled navy exterior and soft grey interior. To showcase the fabric’s two faces, we commissioned a specialist outerwear maker in the foothills of the Italian Alps to laser cut the pieces of this coat individually. Laser cutting each panel of fabric enables the coat to be made without internal canvassing or structure, so this piece almost feels like a cardigan to wear. It’s totally deconstructed and indulgently soft. We like to wear ours with classic grey flannels and a fine merino rollneck beneath. Of course, these are just a few of this season’s outerwear designs, but we hope these three jackets demonstrate the care we take in designing each and every piece that makes our collection. Whether we’re cutting a flannel suit or a cashmere blouson, timeless design, contemporary detailing and superior craftsmanship are always in focus here at Thom Sweeney.
