Why We Work With Loro Piana

January 21, 2021
At Thom Sweeney, we use Loro Piana’s fabrics in much of our tailoring and outerwear. Made in Italy from the finest baby cashmere, they are luxurious, versatile and elegant in equal measure

Regular clients may know that we work closely with the prestigious Italian mill, Loro Piana, on many of the fabrics we use in our collections. The reason for this is simple. In our experience, Loro Piana’s fabrics offer the perfect balance of luxury and longevity. The company was founded in northern Italy in 1924, nestled in a small town called Corso Rolandi, close to the river Sesia. The location is important, because the Sesia gave Loro Piana access to some of the softest natural spring water in Europe (it runs straight down off the Alps), which is a crucial ingredient in treating fine wool and cashmere fabrics. Loro Piana also specialises in cashmere sourced from Hircus Goats in Mongolia and rural China. These goats produce the king of all cashmere fibres, which Loro Piana’s suppliers gather by hand when the animals shed their winter coats in spring. Each animal only produces around 200-250 grammes of cashmere fibre in a year, much of which finds its way into chosen suiting and outerwear fabrics. It’s a truly unique material, something the Loro Piana family decided to specialise in over six generations ago. Here are a few of the Loro Piana cloths we’ve used in our Autumn/Winter ’20 collection, with some insight into why we think they’re great to wear. Hopefully this inspires you to try something new. Storm System & Rain System Loro Piana’s Storm System and Rain System fabrics are seriously hi-tech. To the touch, you’d never know that anything unusual is going on. But, beneath the surface, Loro Piana treats every Storm or Rain System fabric with a breathable water-resistant coating, which turns conventional tailoring cloths into waterproof performance fabrics. This season, our wool Storm System Peacoat and Rain System Mac both feature this impressive technical finish, so are well suited to tackling grey days and winter showers. ‘Cashmere Wish’ Jersey Loro Piana’s Cashmere Wish fabric is a superfine wool and cashmere blend that we use in our casual coats and bomber jackets. Quite apart from its smooth handle and superior warmth, Cashmere Wish is woven like a heavyweight jersey; so it stretches and recovers its shape perfectly. Blousons can sometimes feel a little restrictive, but not this one. Wool and Cashmere Suiting Loro Piana’s wool and cashmere blends are house favourites for our suits and jackets, whether woven as herringbones, twills or in sophisticated woollen flannel. A classic wool and cashmere blend fabric with a soft surface texture and smooth handle, the cloth tailors beautifully and makes for a garment that looks sleek, but is wonderfully comfortable to wear.
